About the Speaker

On August 27, 2003, Ambassador Johnnie Carson assumed the duties of Senior Vice President of the National Defense University.

Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Carson served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Kenya from August 1999 to July 2003. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, and has served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs.

Other postings include tours as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Zimbabwe from 1995-1997 and U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Uganda from 1991-1994. Since joining the Foreign Service in 1969, Ambassador Carson has held a number of positions in Africa, to include assignments in Nigeria, Mozambique, and Botswana.

Ambassador Carson was educated at Drake University (B.A. History and Political Science) and the University of London’s School of Oriental and Africa Studies (M.A. International Relations).
