About the Speaker

Vladimir Kara-Murza is the coordinator of Open Russia, a platform for civil society and pro-democracy activists launched in 2014 by former political prisoner Mikhail Khodorkovsky. He is a member of the federal council of the People’s Freedom Party and a senior adviser at the Institute of Modern Russia. Mr. Kara-Murza was a candidate for the Russian Parliament in the 2003 elections and has also served as campaign chairman for presidential candidate Vladimir Bukovsky and adviser to State Duma opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. He also worked as a journalist for RTVi television, Novye Izvestia, and Kommersant, as well as editor-in-chief of the Russian Investment Review. Mr. Kara-Murza has testified before the parliaments of several countries, and has published opinion pieces in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and other publications. He is the author of Reform or Revolution and a contributor to Russian Liberalism: Ideas and People (both available in Russian). Mr. Kara-Murza holds an MA in history from the University of Cambridge.
