The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville is pleased to announce its annual Ambassador Marilyn McAfee Scholarship.  The $1,200 academic merit scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore or junior currently attending Edward Waters College, Jacksonville University or the University of North Florida.   

In order to be eligible for this award, students must:

  • Be a full-time student  (Florida residency NOT required)

  • Currently hold sophomore or junior status

  • Have a university GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale

  • Demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills

  • Be involved in an academic program and/or have future interests in pursuing a career in international business, government, foreign affairs or military service

  • Be available to participate in a personal interview between March 10-31, 2009

The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville requires an academic or professional reference (e.g. professor, advisor, or supervisor) of your choice to be considered for the scholarship.  You must have your reference write a letter of support and send it to the Council's office separate from your application.  The letter must arrive no later than January 15, 2009. Please note that your reference will also be contacted via telephone to discuss his or her support of you in more detail.

In addition, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville requires you to write an essay on a topic chosen by the Council.  The essay must be typed and double-spaced and may not exceed two pages.  You must use reputable references and cite them appropriately.  You will be evaluated on your ability to comprehend complex issues. The essay must specifically address the following question.  Be sure to cite specific examples.

  • Looking at the stream of history, what do you see as the preeminent forces behind major conflicts and wars?   

Please submit a cover letter including all pertinent contact information with your essay and application.  Your letter of reference must be submitted separately and mailed in a sealed envelope by your reference.  The deadline for submission is January 15, 2009.   Finalists will be notified by March 3, 2009.   The scholarship winner will be notified by April 1, 2009.  Please send all items via mail and/or email to:
